But this was not the only branch in which he excelled ; for, in general surgery, he was well known to be a bold and skilful operator. When a young man, he profited by the experience of an uncle, who was also a distinguished medical officer; and, building his own practice upon the foundation his uncle had laid, he rapidly rose to
